SHAMUS Liptrot is still learning to walk but he dreams of one day getting back on his bike.

The 18-year-old South Australian cyclist suffered devastating injuries when he hit a light pole at last year’s Devonport Carnival.

Michael Matthews wins stage 3b of the Tre Ciclistica Internazionale Bresciana

Canberra’s Michael Matthews has won his second stage of the Tre Ciclistica Internazionale Bresciana, beating home team mate and former race leader Michael Freiberg and U.S.Ausonia CSI Pescanti’s Marco Zorzan. Matthews covered the 10.1km course in a time of 12.50, just two seconds ahead of his Australian counterpart.

Bike King take out A Grade Gunnedah to Tamworth

After missing the placing on the Saturday, in the Keegan Downes Memorial Sundowner Handicap, the continental Bike King team were eager to made amends in the Sundays Gunnedah to Tamworth Division 1 Scratch race. Lead by the experience of Grafton to Inverell winner Cameron Hughes and Peter Milostic, Bike King where eager to break up the race and avoid a sprint finish that might suit the FRF/nswis, Budget Forklifts, and NSWIS teams.

Western Australia’s Freiberg now leads Tre ciclistica internazionale bresciana

Western Australia’s Michael Freiberg has taken over the leadership of the Tre ciclistica internazionale bresciana in Italy. Freiburg, 18, took the leadership from Canberra’s Matthews after he lost time on todays crucial stage. Freiberg made the days winning move which was led home by Vangi’s Roberto Bertucelli.

Canberra’s Michael Mathews has won the opening stage of the Tre ciclistica internazionale bresciana, a 2.7km time trial around the Italian town of Molinetto di Mazzano. Mathews team-mate and Australian time trial champion Michael Freiberg was second, just two seconds behind.

Mark Renshaw: Tour de France Dreaming

Great news for the Bathurst Cycling Community with local star Mark Renshaw named in the Credit Agricole team for the 2008 Tour de France. An Athens Olympian and Commonwealth Games Gold medallist, Mark Renshaw has been desperate to get a ride in the World greatest cycling event for a number of years.

 

After brilliant performances on the track in 1999 & 2000 winning 3 Junior world Championships, including the 1km Time Trial, the Bathurst youngster was selected to carry out the Olympic flag at the 2000 Sydney Olympic. Gold medals would follow in the next few years at the Goodwill Games, Commonwealth Games, and World Cups; the Bathurst star was a part of the World Champion and World Record Breaking Team Pursuit team in 2002, and the Australian Olympic team in 2004.

Next Drapac Porsche event: De Drie Zustersteden Willebroek, Belgium UCI 1.2, (6.7.08)

A fall in the closing stages of the Belgium National Championships on the weekend has opened up this Sunday’s UCI 1.2 event at Willebroek, Belgium.

Top Landbouwkrediet/Tonissteiner performer Bert De Waele who won last years De Drie Zustersteden at Willebroek and was to carry the number 1 in Sunday’s event (06.07.08), crashed heavily at the Nationals when Tom Boonen and teammate Wouter Weylandt came together in the sprint finish. Still uncomfirmed weather De Waele is to start at Willebroek, but the reports are not good for the Belgium rider who finished top ten at last years nationals, as he has a suspected broken collarbone.

Ceramiche Flaminia’s Filippo Simeoni Wins Italian National Championship

Filippo Simeoni (Ceramiche Flaminia Bossini Docce) captured the men’s road Italian National Championship on Sunday in Bergamo after 254.8 km including 13 laps with one trip per lap up the Colle Aperto. The rider from Milano finished ahead of Quicksteps reigning champion Giovanni Visconti and Liquiagas’ stylish Filippo Pozzato.

The Gunnedah Cycling and Triathlon club’s annual “Keegan Downes Memorial” continues to hold its position as one of NSW premier cycling promotion with an excellent field lining up for the 2008 edition of the 111km Handicap.

The race between Coonabarabran and Gunnedah got under way with an inspiring effort by Alan Sumner who raced the first Sundowner in 1967 and set off for Gunnedah in the limit 45minite group. Early in the event it was local rider Robert Mitchell’s 33minute bunch that looked threatening quickly rounding up the 40min bunch and the front markers to set the early pace.

The snow capped mountains of Colorado

3000m of elevation, a new residence and more summer time snow.

High altitude is defined as anything 2400m above sea level or higher, we be at 2996m so damn we high now!!

The second week of June was a week of weird weather, constantly chasing that extra millilitre of oxygen, repeats of Americas best dance crew, the real world, my super sweet sixteen, more training and of course 24 inch Pizzas.

Jongewaard will miss another OlympicsAustralia’s highest-ranked mountain bike cyclist, Chris Jongewaard, has been overlooked for Olympic selection because of the criminal court case he faces after the Beijing games.

Jongewaard, the national cross-country mountain bike champion in 2007, was one of three men in contention to make the cut and was yesterday personally told of Cycling Australia’s decision to pick Victorian Daniel McConnell as the sole Australian male representative in the event.

After having an excellence presence in there first two European starts, Drapac Porsche Development Program have taken there first Belgium Podium finish in the prestigious 61st Halle-Ingooigem.

Elder statesman of the team Stuart Shaw finishing 3rd behind QuickSteps Gert Steegmans and Olympic Gold Medalist Luke Roberts of the Kuota Senges team.

Rider Diary: Angus Morton…Colorado, Where the weather’s fine

Last week I left you with my agonising, and somewhat nightmarish memories of my first week back on the bike, and the looming departure to the land of motor homes, fried chicken and the right to carry a weapon, the United States of America.

After 26 hours straight travel, 2 good movies, 2 shit ones, a bottle or two of red, a seat next to a lady with bird flu, abuse of the massage chairs in LAX and the near arrest of good mate Tim Berkel at US customs for apparently overstaying his VISA we lugged our bikes and bags out onto the side walk of Denver international airport.

16 year old Morton wins Pro race

Morton on his way to winning the raceCompeting in The 64 mile (104 Kilometre) Pro ½ race in Fort Collins, the 16 year old Real Aussie Kid Lachlan Morton did what he has threatened to do since arriving from down under three weeks ago….win his first pro race.

He did it in what is one tough road race that is more a series of hill climbs, blended with very fast descents and open valley roads.

Starting from down town Fort Collins the race started straight into the climb over Dixon Reservoir and a 17% climb onto Centennial Drive to open the legs and settle the bunch, the pace was on from the gun, the first 15 k to bottom of the main climb was punctuated by successive attacks and numerous smaller climbs that started to sought out the field, early numerous attempted breaks would see the main group chase and bring the field back together.

A Break went with 3 riders when Blake Caldwell, Chipotle team, Kevin Nicole Tokyo Joes put the hammer down, that established a 1min 30 sec lead half way up the main climb through Risk Canyon The Aussie rider went to the front to chase, however was covered by the Peloton.

As expected after a hectic start a strong group of 17 riders which included last years winner Sébastien Rosseler of QuickStep and third placegetter Olivier Kaisen of Silence – Lotto broke clear.

Budget Forklifts starts US adventure

The Budget Forklifts Cycling Team, coached by Western Australian Rick Lee, have landed in America after a long haul flight from Australia.

The team, which is made up from star riders from all over the country, will tackle America’s best races in a bid to gain international experience and results.

Led by Australian champions such as Michaela Anderson and Pete Johnston, the team will race on both the road and track over the next few months.

O’Grady will ride in support of the tour leaders Carlos Sastre and Frank and Andy Schleck.

Rider Diary: The Budget Forklift Crew…News from the West

Well as we are so far away from the gossip in the east, I thought I would put down some details as to what has been happening in the west for those who might want to know!

As you were well aware we have returned to the WEST after Road Nationals. Most of the crew were afforded some time to re group, and simply roll the legs on the bike and hang out.

We managed a Halloween party, with heaps of Water balloons, Scary Movies and toffee apples hard enough to crack fillings.
