A beautiful sunny day was put on by the Latrobe City Cycling Club, for the Gippsland Victorian Schools Cycling Championships zone final at Yinnar.
Over 20 schools from the region competed in this zone final, with great turn outs from Bairnsdale Secondary College, Nagle College, Wonthaggi Secondary College and Lavalla College with some excellent competitors.
The day began with a small group of W13 and M13 competitors, with Tom Crutchfield, Natalie Young and Cyrus Monk, all winning their respective races.
The M15 Racing category proved to be a thrilling event with an extremely close sprint finish between Baden Nicholls, Arnold Young and Thomas Dudley. Baden took out the event in a tight finish, just tipping Arnold at the finish line.
Some standout performances of the day by Susan Crowe, winner of W17 (Novice) , Shannon McCurley winner W17 (Racing) and Charlotte McShane, winner W19 (Racing) all giving the male competitors a race for their money with some excellent racing.
The last event for the day proved to be another exciting one with the M19 Racing category, being the closest for the day. The bunch stuck together throughout the 35km event, with Nick Aitken from Wonthaggi Secondary College taking out the event in a very tight sprint finish to the line.
Overall, the day was a complete success. All students were fantastic competitors and really did their schools proud, a big thank you to all teachers and parents and especially the Latrobe City Cycling Club for hosting the event.
