This week at Friday Night Winter Track Racing will be the much anticipated “Peter Bundy Cycles Fat-Mans Wheelrace”
Since its conception late last year in a discussion over a beer in the Handle Bar Tavern, the topic of this race has been a fixture of every track cyclist’s conversations. Debate has raged as who would be, by weight, the strongest rider.
This unique handicap is one that bucks the trend of dieticians all around the world. The handicap is by weight, whereby you are rewarded with a better starting position the heavier you are.
Here’s how it works
To qualify for this event you must be heavier than my (promoter’s) weight. Right at this moment I am 95.9kg. On Friday, my official weight will be recorded and potential entrants will be weighed on the official scales. Entrant’s weigh-in will be done in cycling race clothing with no shoes. A pat down will take place for any contraband (extra weight). Your handicap will be determined by how many grams/kilograms you exceed my weight. I have developed a computer formula to quickly and accurately calculate the marks.
The Race
The event itself is 1km (4 laps). The maximum limit achievable is 220m. Riders must provide there own sturdy handler for the start. The winner of the race will receive:
- Your weight in $1 coins i.e. 110kg = $110
- $150 of cycling equipment from Peter Bundy Cycles
- Perpetual Fat-Mans Trophy
- Jug of Beer
The presentation will take place in the Handle Bar Tavern Post event.
The Sponsor
Peter Bundy Cycles will re-open by the end of August, if not beforehand. After a three year lay off being a rep in the cycle industry, it was destroying Peter to see the needs of our future cyclist not being looked after, so he has decided to re-open. The new shop will be catering for all trackies needs. They also hope to embrace and nurture junior riders, not forgetting road, time trial, masters and women’s specialist gear - basically every need. Previously known as one of Australia’s premier track specialists shops, Peter is keen to re-establish this title as quickly as possible. Peter Bundy Cycles will have big brands like Colango, BH, Argon 18, Hillbrick, Raceline track, plus our legendary hand-built steel frames PETER BUNDY.
The address is

The Rumour
Whilst at a coaching course at the UCI headquarters in Switzerland, former World Sprint Champion Sean Eadie emailed me to indicate that he is eligible to qualify for the race and that he is in preparation with a steady supply of European beer. Will Sean be at the start line? Will he be capable of riding 1000m?
So who will be determined the Fat-Mans Champion for 2007? Be at the Dunc Gray Velodrome this Friday from 7pm to find out. Entry is free.
Cheers Paul
