Rider Diary: Pat Shaw…WHAT A YEAR!

October 29, 2007

Hey Guys,

Been awhile between diaries but all for good reasons, busy racing, working and travelling. I have had a choc-a-block season this year which, will hopefully lead onto a better season next year and some good results.

This year I travelled overseas with U/23 Australian Team where personally i felt i did quite well, even surprised myself a few times, the trip is what really kick started my year. When i was overseas i found i came on in leaps and bounds in strength, speed, cadence and endurance, from the help of Ian Mckenzie’s Ergo’s.

Rider Diary: Mark O’Brien…Finishing a successful Sun Tour

October 22, 2007

09hsmelbHi all,

Here I am checking in for my final diary of this years Jayco Herald Sun Tour, and what a journey it has been.

Coming into the final crit it was still possible anyone of the top four on GCs race, with Matt Wilson holding a slender lead over Steve Morabito.

As Matt had shown his strong sprinting form on the day to Wangaratta, it was quite possible that Astana would accept second on GC, and go for another stage win. It would turn out, that this was exactly their plan.

DSC_0109Brian Crawford caught up with Phil Thuaux during NSWIS training at  Dunc Gray Velodrome.

Cyclingresults.net: Good afternoon Phil, it’s been a few months since we’ve caught up, how is the team going?

Phil Thuaux: “This is my second year with Drapac, last year was my first year and I went to Drapac when I was at Uni and I just recently finished Uni, they’ve treated me well let me study full time at Uni without any pressure to race giving right emphasis to Uni, which is good it let me finish and a good group of guys and people involved with the team they’re all trying to help each other out, there’s no designated leader for the whole season; we see how things go, whoever we nominate we put  in 100% for them. I like the philosophy of the team, the education side.

Rider Diary: Mark O’Brien…The last road stage

October 21, 2007

DSC_8461The final, yet shortest road stage was set to be raced at a furious   pace, with Matt Wilson only 8 seconds off the yellow, and Bernie Sulzberger wanting to win the KOM jersey.

This pretty much guaranteed that no break away would succeed before all sprint and KOM points had been contested.

Evans into ProTour lead after Di Luca gets dropped

October 19, 2007

Cadel Evans is now the leader of the ProTour after an announcement from the UCI early today. The UCI will remove Italian Danilo Di Luca from its ProTour standings, the organisation announced today. Di Luca has led the series since taking the overall classification of the Giro d’Italia, but his luck turned when he was first excluded from the World Championships and then sanctioned by the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI), who gave the 31 year-old a three month suspension which began on October 16 for his involvement in the “Oil for Drugs” scandal.

Rider Diary: Mark O’Brien…A magic day for Mark

October 17, 2007

There was only one word to describe today, magic! We woke up to complete
blue skies, not a breath of wind, and a scheduled temperature of around 25
degrees. Absolute idyllic conditions for riding a bike and I think it was
well welcomed by every rider in the tour after the past 2 days of hard
racing.

Rider Diary: Mark O’Brien…Remembering a mate in Mansfield

October 17, 2007

Hi all,

This morning we were greeted by winds that made yesterday’s winds look like a light breeze. After the usual pre race preparation of eating breakfast 3 hours before start time, and packing the bags, we headed up the road to the race start at the Michelton Winery.

To give everyone a nice picture, the neutral section out of the winery lasted for around 300m with a rocketing tail wind, before we were due to take a left hand bend into a filthy cross wind that would last for the entire 144km journey to Mansfield.

Rider Diary: Savings & Loans Cycling Team…It gets windier

October 16, 2007

herals_sun_2007_132Stage 3 of the Tour saw us leave Nagambie (Mitchelton Winery)  and ride over the Strathbogie Ranges through to the alpine region in Mansfield.

We thought yesterday was windy, well the winds returned today even harder! Right from the gun and out of the car park, SA.Com caught everyone by surprise by driving hard in the cross winds for 5km. There were riders being dropped left right and centre - it was going to be a looong day for some.

Rider Diary: Mark O’Brien…A disappointing day for Drapac Porsche

October 16, 2007

DSC_4953

Today was the first day that counted towards the GC, and the  course was guaranteed to give a good indication of who was going to be within a shout of taking out the 2007 JHST.

After all the happenings around my residing town of Bendigo, with hundreds of school children out to watch, as well as hundreds of other Bendigonians, it was time for the serious stuff. An 149km epic from Bendigo to Nagambie with the first climbs of the tour in 32 degree heat and some gale force winds, it was definitely going to be a hard day.

Results: Herald Sun Tour, Stage 1, Vic

October 15, 2007

Full results & report.

A brilliant opening stage to the Jayco Herald Sun Tour saw Unibet’s Matt Wilson run away with the victory, while most of the peloton seems already out of contention after the first stage.

The moment the flag was dropped the riders attacked down the road and it didn’t let up.

One of the best opening stages was made difficult by the howling side winds and high temperatures, which left only a tough group at the front.

Rider Diary: Mark O’Brien…High home town hopes in Bendigo!

October 15, 2007

n746475369-1244477-8937Hello all,

One day down and 7 to go and what a first day it was! 14 teams of 7 riders, with I believe 15 different nationalities, all racing around a
beautiful 1.7km circuit in the CBD of the town I have called home for the past two years, Bendigo!

Big crowds and amazing atmosphere was going to make for an interesting race, especially with such top class riders as one of my all time heroes Stuart O’Grady, Baden Cooke and race favourite Trent Lowe.

Bundaberg’s Aaron Kemps riding for Swiss team, Astana, provided a multi national flavour to a thrilling prelude to the 2007 Jayco Herald Sun Tour on the streets of Bendigo.

Making the most of the perfect conditions, Kemps was part of a nine man breakaway formed after just six laps of the testing 1.7km circuit and along with British rider, Tom Southam, was one of those who ensured that the peleton never bothered them thereafter.
